High-end security technology meets ancient cultural heritage
MUVE is a network of 11 museums located in the historical city center of Venice and in the Venetian Lagoon. It is one of the biggest cultural attractions in Italy with over two million visitors every year. It boasts an immense cultural heritage, with over 700,000 works of art, five specialist libraries, a photographic archive and a well-equipped warehouse in the Vega Stock in Marghera. The museum buildings itself, for example Doge’s Palace, Correr and St Mark's Clocktower, are also unmeasurably valuable and a part of a hundreds of years of cultural heritage.
Having locks for over 200 or even 300 years old, the challenge was to find a solution to ensure access management with audit trail and eliminate the huge amount of keys while respecting the old and delicate structure of the museum doors.
"When we started the project with Abloy, the big challenge was to adapt the technical solution to our historical buildings. Therefore we worked together to find appropriate solution, which was very interesting. Being an ancient building, it is challenging to adapt the technology to the architecture and same time keep it usable and guarantee appropriate safety and security to our staff, visitors and collections", says Mattia Agnetti, Executive Secretary at MUVE.

As a solution Abloy and MUVE ended up with a locking and access management system PROTEC2 CLIQ which cylinder structure allows concealed installation. In this way, MUVE can have all the benefits of modern technology, one key principle, remote access management and possibility of audit trails without changing the appearance of the historic doors.
"The installation was very complex, because the difficulty was to recreate the locks perfectly equal to the ancient ones but working with modern technology. In the end we came up with a solution that is one of a kind and important for several reasons. One, to have only one key for every door, and the second thing, to really have the level of the best mechanical and electronic security", says Massimo Troncarelli, CEO at locking company Troncarelli Ltd.
All the 3500 employees of the eleven museums have also experienced the benefits of the new system.
"The personnel have been enthusiastic about the system, because it has made their job, movement and managing access in the buildings easier. It is a very functional solution that combines together the highest elements of safety, with of course, our cultural heritage", says Lorenzo Palmisano, Security and Logistic Manager at MUVE.
"Abloy guarantees a high level of security and a high level of technology. We are responsible for these buildings that are overall world cultural heritage, so we had to work on it in partnership with a high level profiled company", Agnetti adds.
