ABLOY PULSE
ABLOY PULSE is a unique digital locking and access management system that does not require batteries or cabling: The system gets its operating power when key is inserted to cylinder.
When NH Collection Helsinki Grand Hansa opened in May 2024 after a several year renovations, it marked the revival of one of Helsinki’s most iconic buildings. The project seamlessly blended the hotel’s historic architecture with modern functionality, offering guests a luxurious experience while preserving its heritage.
Achieving this balance required more than architectural expertise—the hotel needed a secure, flexible access management system that could integrate with the building’s existing infrastructure. For this, they turned to ABLOY PULSE.
"We needed a secure, user-friendly, and reliable lock system that could be retrofitted into our existing doors," says Willem Hagedoorn, Deputy Hotel Director.
Renovating a protected historical site posed unique challenges. Original architectural elements, including doors, couldn’t be replaced or heavily altered, so any new system had to adapt seamlessly. Compounding this was the challenge of managing over 200 keys for contractors, employees, and suppliers during construction, making security a key concern.
"Managing so many keys was chaotic. The old hard-key system was prone to loss and difficult to track," Hagedoorn explains. "We needed a secure and easy-to-use solution."
PULSE provided the perfect answer: a retrofit-friendly, energy-efficient access management system that didn’t require major modifications.
"With PULSE, we kept the original doors while implementing a modern, reliable locking system," Hagedoorn says. "It’s cloud-based, doesn’t need additional hardware, and is incredibly easy to use."
One standout feature is its battery-free design. The self-powered locks operate by using energy harvested when the key is inserted into the lock, reducing maintenance and environmental impact.
PULSE has streamlined daily operations by simplifying key management and providing flexible access management. Hagedoorn demonstrates how easily permissions can be assigned or revoked via a desktop device.
"The system is user-friendly and perfect for non-technical staff. No special training is needed."
As part of the hotel’s sustainability goals, PULSE helps reduce battery waste and physical infrastructure needs.
"The locks fit perfectly into our sustainability goals," Hagedoorn says. "We’ve reduced maintenance and physical resource consumption.”
For NH Collection Helsinki Grand Hansa, security is a key promise to guests and staff. PULSE ensures that security is maintained at the highest level while protecting the hotel’s historical charm.
"Safety is our top priority for both guests and staff," Hagedoorn emphasizes.
"With ABLOY PULSE, we know we’re protected. It’s reliable, easy to use, and perfectly suited for heritage buildings like ours. It has greatly improved both our security and operational efficiency."
